Mole Removal, Skin Tag & Small Leisons

Moles

There are several different types of mole and the tendency to develop moles can run in families. Some moles are flat and some can be raised. Moles which are brown and are evenly pigmented with a regular outline do not give cause for any concern about the possibility of malignant change. However, irregular shaped moles, greater than one centimeter in diameter and irregularly pigmented are referred to as “clinically atypical moles” and are unstable. These moles may become malignant, especially if stimulated by strong sunshine. You should consult your GP should you be concerned about any moles.

Treatment

Moles can be excised surgically. This always leaves a scar about two and a half times the length of the mole. Shaving the moles is another technique that can be used. Although it will leave a better cosmetic result than excision, a small mark will still be left. If the mole is hairy, not all the hair follicles are removed by shave excision so the hair in the area may continue to grow.

Lasers now make the removal of moles much simpler and the cosmetic results are generally very good. If the mole is hairy though, a separate laser may be needed to help diminish the hair.

If a mole is "atypical" and "unstable" it is unwise to treat with laser and the laser may stimulate the mole to become malignant. The decision to treat a mole with laser should be taken by both the patient and the medical practitioner following a full consultation.

Possible Complications

After mole removal with laser, complications are unusual. Occasionally the surface of the treated skin may be slightly raised or slightly lower than the surrounding area. This will blend with time. Sometimes, moles can recur as laser does not remove the root of the mole. If this happens it is easily re-treated.

After Treatment

Where the mole is removed, a small wound will be left. This will be dressed. A week is usually long enough for this to heal. The area that has been treated with be sensitive to the sun for some months and you should use a high factor sunscreen (factor 30) for approximately 6 months.

Skin Tag / Age Spots / Small Lesions

The Hyfrecator is used in these treatments. It is a cautery device often used in minor Surgery.
